Rethinking Education: Matthew Lipman's Pedagogical Model

Profile image of Peter Paul E Elicor

2016, Tambara

Do our current standard academic practices efficiently address the changing needs of modern education? Are our tacit assumptions on teaching aligned with the contemporary revaluation of education theories, understanding of students' competency, role of teachers and pedagogical methods? The well-meaning stalwarts of the " old system " might disagree to apply drastic changes in their usual teaching practices. Yet, one has to recognize that the reluctance to correct dearly-held teaching dispositions, either for convenience or out of sheer rigidity, is itself an indication of an erroneous assumption of the authority of educators. This paper argues that transmission-based pedagogical practices reinforce stultification among students. Following Lipman's pedagogical model, it further argues that an inquiry-based reflective paradigm, which is practiced within a community of inquiry, can supplant the " standard " but less effective academic practices that still find their way inside the Philippine classrooms.

This paper presents Matthew Lipman's critique of traditional pedagogy as seen in his work Thinking in Education (2003). Lipman points out that traditional pedagogy does not foster reflective thinking. This paper also discusses the historical development of the practice of community of inquiry in the Philippines from the time it was introduced by Zosimo Lee in 1996 to Manila Public Schools, and in 2012 to the teachers of Ayala Foundation, Inc. Teacher Training Institute. This article claims that Lipman's critique of traditional pedagogy mirrors the situation of Philippine classrooms. The author further argues that it is for this reason that the practice of community of inquiry still cannot be fully implemented in the country.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine educational landscape is greatly affected. This education issue concerns the country's curriculum and instruction (CIN), covering students' learning, delivery modalities, competencies, teachers' characteristics, and community involvement. Nonetheless, the CIN must be developed, considering the students, teachers, community, and the pressing challenges in the teaching-learning process, promoting quality education while considering the pandemic, by looking into teachers' perspectives. This qualitative research used content analysis to derive insights from the critical reflections of sixteen (16) teacher participants. It aims to present the participants' reflections on the New Normal education issues, leading to curriculum and instruction development inputs. Furthermore, the emerging themes are (a) essentiality and feasibility in choosing learning competencies; (b) good quality, flexibility, sustainability, and safety in ...

In every aspect of human life, theories and principles play a very significant role in everyday living. Theories and principles are also identified as philosophies and these must be put into practice. Otherwise, they will only serve as something relevant for library purposes. Hence, philosophies must be for and emerge from experience. Thus, this study relates to the character of the present educational philosophies in the status-quo and attempts to answer questions through document analysis. The specific questions are: at present, what are the emerging educational philosophies; how do these philosophies operate in every classroom; and what are the significant features of the educational philosophies. Moreover, the study suggested some varied but justified recommendations on the role of the educational philosophies for teachers and learners' development.

The pandemic may have changed the landscape of how they learn but the purpose of education remains the same – that is for the students to be able to apply what they have learned for the greater good of the community. It is a must that teachers and learners adapt to the new normal. This research aimed to determine the challenges in the new learning modalities of elementary school teachers, district of San Felipe, Zambales SY 2020-2021. The study made use of descriptive research design with the aid of questionnaires as the main instrument in gathering the data. The respondents were the one hundred eight public elementary school teachers in district of San Felipe, Division of Zambales. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis and statistical treatment of data. The findings of the study indicate that the challenges in the new learning modalities of elementary school teachers are the conduct of assessment test and obtaining learners’ level of understanding, avoidance of plagiarism a...

This study engenders discussions on the notion of rendering Lesson Study as a means to enhance teacher professional development, and at the same time as an end in itself in order to be legitimate as an integral component of the course offerings in graduate schools. Using phenomenological case study that covered two Lesson Studies, we looked at the affordances and constraints that would allow the implementation of Lesson Study to be successfully incorporated into the program. The Anthropological Theory of Didactics was utilized as an analytical tool to render a more detailed investigation on levels of codertermination. Please cite: Elipane, L. & Bonus, B. (2015). Institutionalizing Lesson Study in teacher education institutions in the Philippines. As we reform Philippine education in light of the K-12 program, there are certain trends and travails. One standpoint I could superficially anticipate is the shifting terrains of career of the Philosophy majors just like my self. In the K-12 program, Logic and Philosophy of Man subjects will be taken out from being offered as college courses. The only philosophy course that will be retained as a CHEd-mandated General Education subject is Understanding the Self and Ethics. Thus, there is an enormous threat to college teachers of Philosophy to be displaced – or worse – to be removed from the teaching profession in college institutions. In this paper, I want to suggest that the transitions are really not that drastic to the point of leaving Philosophy teachers unemployed. Aside from the fact that the senior high schools will still be at the same age as the first and second year college levels of the former education program – that will have an incorporation of Philosophy subjects – there is an elementary subject that is advisably to be taught by those who are knowledgeable of Philosophy. And that subject is Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao or ESP, which is to be taught from Grade 1 to Grade 10. ESP has a huge overlap with philosophical virtues that the students would benefit much if the teachers were Philosophy majors, or at least teachers who have an acquaintance with philosophical training. Innovation is in fact a key for the Philosophy professionals to shun off the intimidation due to the transitions in the Philippine education system. Indeed, it is an opportunity for reinventing ourselves to also be relevant to the younger generations.
