N2 - This thesis aims to elucidate the relatively neglected Book III of Iōannēs Kantakouzēnos’ Histories by offering an English translation of, and commentary on, the first 30 of its 100 chapters. The translation of such an important text is intended to provide a convenient resource for other scholars studying fourteenth-century Byzantium and to highlight the significance of this section of the Histories.The thesis is divided into two Parts (I-II). Part I comprises the Introduction in five Sections (1-5). Section 1 briefly describes the manuscript tradition and previous translations, and then explains the aims, scope and approach of the thesis and the principles adopted regarding translation and transliteration. Section 2 provides a brief overview of the author’s life and times before summarising and reviewing the previous scholarly literature concerning the Histories. Section 3 outlines the content and structure of the complete text. Section 4 discusses Kantakouzēnos’ historiographical method, concentrating on the sources of the Histories, his handling of chronology and his literary approach. Section 5 analyses Kantakouzēnos’ portrayal of the major protagonists, including himself, in the translated chapters, examining how he wished the outbreak of the 1341-1347 civil war to be understood and how he assigned responsibility for the conflict.Part II of the thesis comprises an English translation of Kantakouzēnos’ Histories, Book III, Chapters 1-30, with an accompanying Commentary, which is presented in the form of endnotes. The Commentary elucidates the text and the translation, placing the passages under consideration in the wider context of the Histories.

An Annotated Translation of How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator

This research is an annotated translation. The problems of this research are: (1) What are the difficulties encountered by the researcher/translator during the process of translation? (2) How are those difficulties solved? The aims of this research are: (1) To attain factual information concerning the difficulties faced by the researcher/translator while translating the source text, (2) To find out the plausible solution by referring to the principles of translation, the translation strategies, the theories of translation, and the theories of both the Indonesian language as well as the English language. The methods of the research are: (1) the introspective and retrospective methods, (2) the sampling method is purposefully randomly. From the 167 data collected, the researcher purposefully selected the most difficult data which amount to 45 data; from these 45 data, the researcher has randomly chosen 25 data to be analysed. The results of this research are: (1) only five out of the thirteen principles of translation were employed in this research, i.e. Meaning, Style and Clarity, Form, Register, and Idiom; (2) thirteen out of thirty translation strategies were applied in this research, i.e. Transposition (2 data), Unit Shift (2 data), Phrasal Verb (2 data), Idiom (2 data), Information Change (2 data), Loan (2 data), Calque (2 data), Explicitness Change (2 data), Expansion (2 data), Compression (2 data), Antonymy (2 data), Cohesion Change (1 data), and Clause Structure Change (2 data). The finding of this research is that not all of the thirteen principles of translation and the thirty translation strategies are employed because there are only twenty five data analysed.

This article concerns on the translation techniques based on the emphasis of language, source and target. This article is conducted with qualitative reserch design by using library study and review of literature. This article shows that the emphasis in translation, whether source langauge or target language has suitable technique in transfering the idea of source text. This article shows that source language emphasis closely relates to word level equivalence that might be assisted by machine translation or fully exploring human capital of thinking. The present paper examines the ways of achieving adequacy in translation. The aim of the study is to define and describe the options that the different translators choose while rendering the message of the same source text (ST) and to establish the translation adequacy conditions. The translators’ options are considered in terms of the techniques employed to achieve equivalence between the textual micro units of the original and those of the target text (TT). It is argued that the choice of the translation techniques is determined by the global translation strategy which is seen as a translator’s action plan to reach the functional identification between the ST and TT. Disciplinary identity depends on how the disciplinary research object is conceived of. If translation studies is a discipline studying translation and translating, it is natural that it can define its identity at the intersection between translation and translating. This intersection is translation process. The need for an epistemological description of translation process arises form the need to make the process describable or to find a possibility of its optimum description. To do this translation studies needs an elementary model of translation process that would ensure the comparability of di¤er-ent translations and describability of translation culture. New interest in the evaluation of translation quality and in the linguistic nature of translation brings along the necessity to reconceptualize di¤erent trends in translation studies. Translation studies is on the verge of a new self-description, and the language and attitudes of this self-description should derive from a systemic understanding of the research object of translation studies.

The aim of the study is to find out the type of translation method that the college students use most in translating a text from English into Indonesia, and challenges that the college students face in translating the material. The subject of this research takes place in one College in Cimahi. The participants of this study are 10 college students who will translate a text from English into Indonesian. The college students translation method in translating a text from English into Indonesian are the research object. The data collection techniques used in this study involved doing the test, and interview. The Bowu zhi: An Annotated Translation

Abstract: This dissertation has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, it provides an annotated translation of the full text of the Bowu zhi by Zhang Hua (232-300), an intriguing early mediaeval work that contains passages which throw interesting light on a number of fields in mediaeval Chinese scholarship and the development of traditional Chinese science. As reference to the Bowu zhi is rendered difficult by the parlous state of the text, a full translation with accompanying textual reconstruction where necessary was unavoidable, to which has been added a brief study of Zhang Hua. The second purpose of this dissertation is to attempt to gain a clearer understanding of the textual authenticity of the various extant editions of the Bowu zhi, and thus determine whether the Bowu zhi is a reliable source of mediaeval Chinese scholarship.

MA Thesis Translation

Admission requirements.

Students can start writing their thesis only after they have successfully completed the MA Thesis seminar Translation in the first semester, culminating in an approved annotated bibliography and thesis proposal.

Description

Aim of the Master’s Thesis A thesis is an academic essay, written by the student in consultation with the supervisor. The thesis must show that the student is capable of summarizing and analyzing existing literature in a critical manner, formulating one or more well-defined and motivated research questions and of conducting independent research.

At the heart of a Master’s thesis lies a research question, together with the answer to that question. Before a research question can be formulated, the student first has to do preparatory reading. The student then suggests an approach to arrive at possible answers to the research question. The research can be done by comparing views found in the literature and/or by collecting and analyzing data.

Submitting the Thesis Proposal Once the student has successfully passed the thesis seminar (i.e. has an approved annotated bibliography and thesis proposal) and been assigned to a supervisor (by the seminar instructors), the final thesis proposal can be submitted to the Board of Examiners using the Thesis Proposal form. The Thesis Proposal form should include the title of the thesis and a description of the topic. The form must be submitted to the Board of Examiners before 15 February . The Board will then inspect the thesis proposal to ensure that it is of an appropriate academic level. They will also appoint a second reader.

Deadline for submission complete draft: 1 June 2024 Deadline for submission final version: 1 July 2024 Deadline for resit: 30 August 2024

Please note that there is no supervision in July and August.

Students with extensions can continue writing without supervision in the first semester of the following academic year and submit before 1 November 2024. After this deadline, students have to start over with a new topic and new supervisor.

Handing in the Thesis

It is advisable to hand in the chapters of the thesis one by one and request feedback from the supervisor. Once the thesis has been approved by the supervisor, the final electronic version can be sent to both the supervisor and the second reader. When doing so, please include the e-mail address [email protected] in cc. Check with the supervisor if there are any specific guidelines regarding formatting and referencing.

In assessing the quality of the thesis, the following aspects play an important role:

The originality of the research question

Explaining the background of the research question

The critical analysis of source materials

Integration of secondary literature into the argument

Language use, structure and style

The degree of independence displayed during the research and supervision process

Course objectives

Ability to independently formulate a clear, concise, original and relevant research question that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of central debates and methods in Translation Studies

Ability to critically analyze the selected materials using a well-chosen and well-justified research methodology

Ability to synthesize secondary sources aimed at an advanced academic readership

Ability to write a coherent and consistent discussion that presents clear arguments and conclusions that follow logically from the presented materials

Ability to reflect critically on the research carried out, its limitations, and its contribution to existing and future research

Feedback is only provided on completed chapters that have been handed in in a timely manner (deadlines are agreed beforehand with the supervisor)

The thesis has to be at least 6.0 in order to pass. Resits are submitted before 1 September 2024. There is no supervision in July and August.
