Should You Get a Ph.D. in Health Science Online?

The pandemic has revealed the weaknesses, as well as strengths, of the American healthcare system. Never has the need for healthcare leaders, administrators, and educators been so strong. In fact, the Department of Labor Statistics predicts that employment in medical management will grow by 32% between now and 2030. In other words, now is the perfect time to earn a Doctorate in Health Science and become an asset to the healthcare community. For many, of course, the time it takes to earn a high-level graduate degree is discouraging. Luckily, it’s now possible to earn a health science degree online. If you’re considering an online Ph.D. in Health Sciences, here are the things you need to know!

D.H.Sc. vs. Ph.D.

Those interested in earning an online Ph.D. in Health Sciences may discover that there are two routes to earning a doctorate: a Ph.D. and a Doctorate of Health Science , or D.H.Sc. It’s important to know the difference.

The D.H.Sc. degree is typically completed in three years and can frequently be earned online. Applicants to D.H.Sc. programs are expected to have some experience working in healthcare and many D.H.Sc. students hold professional credentials or licensure. The D.H.Sc. is a great choice for those who want to become healthcare leaders. Though the degree prepares graduates to work in higher education and research, it is truly ideal for those who want to improve community health outcomes by working in health management, health policy, or global health.

The Ph.D. in Health Science is typically completed in person and can take up to seven years to finish. The focus of this program tends to be on developing the knowledge base through research. Ph.D. students are also trained to become teachers more than health care managers and leaders. Those who graduate from a Ph.D. program are mostly qualified to become educators at the college and university level, as well as researchers in the field. In other words, the focus is more academic in nature and less practical.

Concentrations and Coursework

One of the many benefits of earning a D.H.Sc. degree online is that students can choose to concentrate on an area of expertise that prepares them for a highly specialized career in health science . D.H.Sc. students must take core coursework in health science, including Global Health, Research Methods, and more. They may also take elective credits in a number of areas including Toxicology, Comparative Healthcare Systems, and Infectious Diseases. All D.H.Sc. students must complete a dissertation and dissertation presentation. Additionally, students must take coursework in their area of concentration .

Clinician Concentration

The Health Care Clinician concentration prepares graduates to be leaders in a clinical healthcare environment. The program focuses on research, evidence-informed care, and public health.

Classes in this area of concentration train students to become public health experts and clinical leaders. These courses include:

  • Advanced Disease Processes and Treatment
  • Lifestyle and Health Issues
  • Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
  • Integrative and Complementary Medicine

Students who want to pursue a career teaching other health care professionals can concentrate in the area of Education. Graduates of this concentration are prepared to be successful educators as well as researchers. This means you do not need to spend years working towards your Ph.D. in Health Sciences, as you can attain a career in education with a doctorate in hand.

Students concentrating on Education train to become teachers. As such, students take classes that support this goal. These include:

  • Teaching in the Health Professions
  • Educational Assessment
  • Curriculum and Syllabus Development
  • Pedagogy and Teaching Strategies for College Instructors

Clinical Nutrition

Students who concentrate on Clinical Nutrition review functional nutritional assessment and learn how to use nutrition as a means of intervention and treatment of chronic diseases. Graduates of this program may work in nutrition research or pursue a career in dietetics.

Classes in Clinical Nutrition prepare students to clinically assess patients and formulate nutritional plans. Classes include Advanced Clinical Nutrition I through IV. Advanced Clinical Nutrition I covers integrative nutrition and functional medicine in Metabolic Health Issues and Cardiovascular Health. Advanced Clinical Nutrition II covers integrative nutrition and functional medicine in Digestive Health Issues. Advanced Clinical Nutrition III trains students in Chronic and Degenerative Diseases. Lastly, Advanced Clinical Nutrition IV covers integrative nutrition and functional medicine in Neurological and Behavioral disorders.

Benefits of an Online Health Science Degree

There are a number of benefits to earning an online Health Science degree. At University of Bridgeport, the online Doctor of Health Sciences can be completed in as few as 40 months, allowing graduates to begin their careers with much more expediency than other doctoral programs. Additionally, all classes can be taken online, except for a one-week, on-campus seminar that provides students with workshops and expert training. This learning format allows students to continue working, should they want to, and save money on costs such as parking, on-campus housing, and on-campus fees. The online degree has three start terms, which allows students to begin their studies as soon as they’d like, without having to wait for the traditional September start. All of these benefits translate to a highly flexible, convenient, and cost-efficient doctorate program.

The healthcare industry is in need of well-educated and talented leaders. With the flexibility that an online Health Science doctorate can provide, those already working in the healthcare field can earn their doctorate when, where, and how they want without losing out on a quality education. Upon graduating from an online Health Science doctorate program, students will be prepared to manage health practices, provide education to health workers, and ultimately, make a positive difference in the lives of practitioners and patients alike.

Professionals in the field can be divided into two broad categories: those who perform research and those who work as clinicians applying their knowledge to advance healthcare, cure illnesses, and gain better insight into how humans and animals function.

What is a PhD in Health Sciences?

A PhD in Health Sciences is a post-professional degree that typically takes 4-6 years to complete. A Doctorate (PhD) in Health Sciences can help you reach your ultimate goals whether that is in the classroom as an educator or the boardroom as a manager, as a practitioner or a researcher. A PhD in Health Sciences allows professionals in the field of healthcare to specialize in a relevant line of work.

Why study online.

To earn your PhD in Health Sciences, you can choose the traditional route of attending an on-campus college, or instead, attend an online university. The benefits of attending an online university are vast. They include:

1. Savings:

It’s no secret that university is expensive, costs add up quickly and there’s a reason that many students take out loans. Studying online proves to be more affordable than traditional universities. After tuition and associated fees, online programs almost always cost less than on-campus institutions, and course materials like textbooks are generally offered online at no extra cost. Additionally, most students will save on housing and/or transportation costs incurred by attending a traditional college. There are many quality programs available, and if you’re looking to save money, online university is a perfect solution.

2. Flexibility:

When taking classes at a traditional college, students must show up at designated times and sit through rather lengthy lectures before running to their next class. And yet, if they somehow manage to space out those classes and have time for a short break, they likely still have to remain on campus. It can make for really long, tiring days. By studying online, students can balance their outside commitments with their education and be more flexible about getting work done in case of a family matter or a meeting at work. You get to choose your own learning time and environment.

3. Accessibility:

If you live in a cold weather city, you know the frustration of dealing with a storm and the danger of navigating on snowy roads to get to class. Even if you don’t live where it snows, there are many factors that can make it difficult to commute for every class. Online courses make attending class as easy as turning on your computer or tablet from the comfort of your home or a café down the block. Usually, your options for university are naturally limited by your location. If you live in California, or abroad for that matter, it can be difficult and costly to attend school in Boston. But location is irrelevant with online courses. If you live in Puerto Rico and want to take classes in Michigan, you can! All you need is your computer. Accessibility is a major, and often undervalued, benefit of online classes.

Can i get the doctor of health science (d.h.s./d.h.sci) degree online.

Yes, the D.H.S./D.H.Sci program is offered in a distance learning format by numerous institutions across the United States. This option, along with the hybrid learning format, is an option that caters to individuals who have neither the time nor the resources for on-campus learning.

Health Sciences as a broad discipline is not without its issues. Challenges are surrounding the quality, methods, cost, administration, and delivery of health care services. The D.H.S./D.H.Sci. program equips students with the skills to evaluate the state of healthcare, conduct in-depth research, interpret data, develop answers, and apply these solutions to benefit individual patients and the entire community.

What is the Doctor of Health Science (D.H.S./D.H.Sci) for?

D.H.S. is a doctorate for those who want rigorous training in the School of Health Arts and Sciences.

This program is designed for clinical health professionals who wish to advance their careers in medical practice, administration, research, and education. It also allows scholarly professionals to get specialized training in healthcare practice and clinical practices.

On account of the research-oriented nature of the D.H.S. program, many of its graduates end up in academia, assume teaching positions, and make research contributions to the health sciences. Essential topics in D.H.S. programs include:

  • biochemistry,
  • pharmacology,
  • human pathology,
  • herbal therapies,
  • alternative healing,
  • microbiology,
  • and integrated health systems.

A D.H.S. degree focuses on the application, dissemination, and translation of health science research to professional practice. They focus on the area of instruction and use their extensive exposure to diverse healthcare systems in their practice.

The D.H.S. program produces leaders and educators in the clinical community and the health system.

What sort of accreditation should I look for in a D.H.S. school?

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) generally provides accreditation for many graduate programs including D.H.S. on a national level. Similarly, the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) accredits institutions that offer online programs or hybrid educational formats for students.

Most D.H.S. schools today have regional accreditations and pending endorsement status from HLC. In most cases, regional accreditation is acceptable; recognition from these committees is a testament to an educational institution’s credibility. You need to have a keen eye in choosing an accredited program.

How do I earn my D.H.S. degree?

The admissions requirements for a D.H.S. program are a master’s degree and at least two years of work experience or equivalent exposure in the healthcare industry. Some schools admit bachelor’s degree holders given that they will pursue a master’s degree and a D.H.S program on a single track. Financial aid is available.

After completing prerequisite courses, a D.H.S. can be completed in two to three years’ time if you are studying full-time or on a fast track. Part-time students, on the other hand, usually finish the program within four to five years.

Credit hour requirements vary from school to school. In some, you need to complete 54 credit units in total; others require as much as 125 credit hours inclusive of coursework, projects, and final requirements.

Requirements for D.H.S. graduation differ as well. Some demand a dissertation while others oblige students to accomplish a capstone project. A few D.H.S. schools don’t set any written requirements at all.

What type of degree do I need to pursue research or educate others in Health Sciences?

Any doctorate holder in the medical field is qualified to teach in a D.H.S. school. Other similar degrees which can be part of the faculty lineup are:

  • Doctor of Public Health (D.P.H.),
  • Doctor of Health Education (D.H.Ed.),
  • Doctor of Health Administration (D.H.A.),
  • Ph.D. in Health Science,
  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D./D.O.), and many more.

The dissertations and capstone projects of graduate students are vital contributions to Health Science research.

How do I earn a transitional or bridge D.H.S. degree?

Almost all Doctor of Health Science programs are taken entirely online. If not, the institution adopts a hybrid arrangement. In some cases, the school may ask you to attend classes on campus, but most of the time, you will enjoy the distance learning setup.

To be sure about what you need to accomplish for admission to a conventional, online, or hybrid D.H.S. program, check with your university and request information.

What kind of career and salary can I expect with my D.H.S. degree?

Doctor of Health Science graduates are expected to hold leadership positions in medical institutions, teach in academia, conduct advanced medical research, or land all or a combination of these career paths.

In clinical settings, D.H.S. graduates manage teaching groups consisting of medical technicians, assistants, and therapists.

With a vast range of responsibilities, a Doctor of Health Science who works as a hospital administrator in a health system can earn as much as $104,830 annually. Professors with a D.H.S. degree make $80,840 every year.

Do I need a license to practice my expertise in Health Science?

Generally speaking, you don’t need a license to be called a Doctor of Health Science. However, the disciplines that you already specialize in before getting this degree might require one to allow you to practice. Some states do seek a form of a license from D.H.S. graduates who want to assume leadership roles in clinical settings that provide health care.

What schools offer D.H.S. degrees?

The Huntington University of Health Sciences (HUHS) in Knoxville, Tennessee is a nationally accredited D.H.S. program that offers 100% online learning.

Other regionally accredited schools providing the same include the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana; and A.T. Still University of Health Sciences (ATSU) in Kirksville, Missouri. These schools offer the D.H.S. program in an entirely online learning format.

The Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston, Massachusetts also offers D.H.S. 100 % online, but the program only allows students to study part-time for nine semesters. Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s D.H.S. program is exclusive for those who want to study on-campus. The University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut adopts a hybrid format.

The Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia entirely different. It offers a D.H.S. program that can be completed online, but the school does not require a dissertation or a capstone project from students as a requirement for graduation.

Do you seek a lifelong exploration of the health sciences to uncover and design actionable solutions to issues surrounding the health sector and modern medicine? A D.H.S. program lets you do all that.

Is a Doctor of Health Science degree worth it?

That depends on your individual circumstances and goals. An online Doctor of Health Science degree can open up better job opportunities, provide more expertise in the field of health care, and give you the credentials to teach or consult in the health field.

However, it all depends on whether or not you have the time and money to invest in the program and how it might benefit you in the long run.

Is the degree program practice-oriented or theory-oriented?

Our faculty focus on skills that are grounded in proven health administration research. The courses are designed to teach skills for the workplace. The seminars and capstone are industry-focused. In addition, the seminar can be taken across cohorts that provide students with professional networking opportunities.

What is the difference between a Master of Health Administration (MHA), a Master of Public Health (MPH) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA)?

The Master of Health Administration degree focuses on skills in leadership, management and operations specific to healthcare systems, such as hospitals and clinics. An MHA prepares you to navigate these systems with knowledge of a broad range of healthcare-specific management, including accounting/finance, marketing, management, law, policy, operations and quality assurance.

A Master of Business Administration improves your business acumen in a broad range of industries. MBA skills transfer into anything from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Profit-driven industries benefit from the business knowledge people with their MBAs possess.

A Master of Public Health is specific to those who want to focus on work that improves the health of entire communities and populations. This includes an understanding of social and behavioral science, environmental health, biostatistics, epidemiology and health policy.

All three degrees help you move into leadership and management positions; however, the MHA and MPH are designed for those looking to become leaders within the health field. Those who earn their MBA can often work in industries that support healthcare but are not necessarily employed by the health systems directly.

You can expect to experience any combination of homework, graded exams, final projects, group work or graded reports. View the Purdue Grading Scale for more information.

Public Health Nutrition MPH

We are excited to announce the launch of our new ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship (DI) to prepare Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs)!

Visit the BPH Dietetic Internship page for more information.

The UC Berkeley Public Health Nutrition Program trains future leaders in food and nutrition research, policy, and practice to identify current and emerging public health nutrition challenges and solutions with an emphasis on social determinants of health and systems level change.

The program is structured to provide students with the skills needed to contribute to scientific understanding of public health nutrition challenges, create healthy food systems, identify and advocate for effective food policies, and plan, implement, and evaluate programs to improve population nutrition and health. We seek to train people who want to lead at the local, state, national, and global levels in tackling nutrition challenges and improving population diet and health. This program offers training in core public health skills and specifically focuses on nutrition policy, epidemiology, and food systems, as well as overall critical thinking, analysis, and leadership skills.

We offer a two-year MPH, 11-month MPH, and a 4+1 MPH. The two-year, full-time MPH graduate students are expected to complete at least 48 units of coursework over four academic semesters and one summer. Students must complete both school-wide required courses as well as PHN required courses. All two-year MPH students complete a public health practice experience for a minimum of 12 weeks over the summer between their first and second years in the program. Internship sites are chosen from a wide range of public health organizations and research institutions and are selected based on the student’s objectives for professional development and the needs of the organization. Many sites are local, but students may also intern in other parts of the country or the world.

The 11-month MPH program with a concentration in Public Health Nutrition is offered to professional Registered Dietitians (RDs) who have at least 2 years of work experience as an RD. It is also open to qualified health professionals such as physicians and nurses. The 11-month program focuses specifically on developing skills in nutrition epidemiology and research. It is an intensive, full-time course of study running from July to May. The program requires completion of 7 units of coursework in Summer Session, and at least 16–18 units of coursework in the fall and spring semesters. Total unit requirement is 42 units.

A 4+1 MPH program in Public Health Nutrition is offered to UC Berkeley Public Health Undergraduate Majors & Alumni only . Please see the 4+1 PHN program page for more information.

Our in-residence programs are full-time programs only. For a part-time program option, please see the 27 month online MPH program’s Public Health Nutrition Concentration.

Our curriculum offers unique experiences for public health nutrition students:

  • The Graduate Certificate in Food Systems prepares students to think critically about the multi-level, multi-system factors that affect food production, distribution, and consumption locally, nationally, and globally.
  • The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Nutrition Training Program provides future MCH Nutrition leaders with the skills to identify, monitor, evaluate and implement public health nutrition programs. Although funding through the training program is reserved for students who have, or are eligible for, the Registered Dietitian certification, other experiences and opportunities throughout the year sponsored by the MCH Nutrition Training Program are open to all students.
  • The MPH in PHN does not prepare students to become Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN or RD credential). If you are interested in becoming an RD, please see the 21-month Master of Nutritional Sciences and Dietetics (MNSD) program offered in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, which provides the required coursework and supervised practice hours for RD credentialing examination eligibility.

New Dietetic Internship Accepting Applications for Fall 2024

Berkeley Public Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) to offer a Dietetic Internship (DI) to prepare Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). For more information, visit the BPH DI webpage or email [email protected] .

UC Berkeley has two different dietetics programs. The DI program at Berkeley Public Health has a heavy emphasis in public health nutrition (outpatient dietetics, public policy, research, and food systems) and interns will be concurrently completing an MPH in Public Health Nutrition at the School of Public Health. The Master of Nutritional Sciences & Dietetics Graduate Program offered in the Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology Department provides candidates professional dietetics training with a focus on clinical nutrition and the underlying biological basis of human health and disease, through advanced dietetic coursework, supervised internship practice, and an immersive research experience. We have plans for ongoing collaboration that will allow both programs to thrive on the UCB campus and in the Bay Area.
